People who become ill in Norway are guaranteed medical treatment. As a basic principle, health services are to be distributed according to need, not according to ability to pay. The Norwegian waiting list system for hospital treatment is unique. With the exception of emergency treatment, one must be placed on a waiting list to get an appointment for an examination or treatment at a public hospital. The wait can be as long as three months. Student work: After getting a student residence permit in Norway a student can work maximum 20 hours a week during the semester and full time during the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays Student life in Norway: There are several active student societies, clubs and organizations for students in Norway. These include societies for students on a particular study programme, social clubs for specific faculties, and societies for the pursuit of certain hobbies and interest. Among the latter are theatre groups, choirs, publications, political societies and special interest groups.
